Can Ozone be Used in Unoccupied Spaces?

Ozone has been extensively used for water purification, but ozone chemistry in water is not the same as ozone chemistry in air. High concentrations of ozone in air, when people are not present, are sometimes used to help decontaminate an unoccupied space from certain chemical or biological contaminants or odors (e.g., fire restoration). However, little is known about the chemical by-products left behind by these processes (Dunston and Spivak, 1997). While high concentrations of ozone in air may sometimes be appropriate in these circumstances, conditions should be sufficiently controlled to insure that no person or pet becomes exposed. Ozone can adversely affect indoor plants, and damage materials such as rubber, electrical wire coatings, and fabrics and art work containing susceptible dyes and pigments (U.S. EPA, 1996a).

The Fact is:

Ozone will damage and destroy an automotive interior in a very short time this is why we do not recommend the use of Ozone or ionizing machines inside any vehicle or motor home because its like exposing the interior to the sun for 10 years. There are to many liabilities.

Ozone-Generating Air Cleaners and Indoor Air Chemistry

Ozone-generating air cleaners are marketed to homeowners as well as business establishments ostensibly to remove odors and other contaminants from indoor air. IEMB has characterized ozone and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions from these devices in full-scale environmental chamber tests and characterized performance in a research test house. To date, findings demonstrate that, for those models tested, ozone generation rates are generally within the ranges stated by the manufacturers and some models have the capacity to generate ozone concentrations of 200 parts per billion (ppb) in the test house, well above EPA’s 8-hour ambient ozone standard of 80 ppb. Additionally, ozone and nitrogen dioxide emission rates increase with decreasing relative humidity, and the relationship between ozone emission rate and NOx generation rate varies between different models of different manufacturers. Ozone-generating air cleaners equipped with an ozone sensor/controller designed to prevent activation of the ozone generator at concentrations above 50 ppb performed erratically in full-scale chamber tests but appeared to perform as designed in limited short-term (24 h) tests in a research test house. We conclude that more extensive testing is needed to characterize the sensor/controller. However, tests in the research test house clearly demonstrate that these devices are capable of producing ozone concentrations well above those of accepted health guidelines.

IEMB is currently investigating the impact of ozone generators on concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments. These experiments investigate the chemical reactions that take place when an ozone-generating air cleaner is operated in the presence of emissions from a typical source of VOCs, such as an air freshener or cleaning product. Results demonstrate that the ozone-generating air cleaners have little impact on airborne concentrations of solvents used in consumer products, but do impact concentrations of many of the fragrance compounds emitted by this type of product. Reaction products include formaldehyde and other oxygenated organics. The interaction between ozone and some of the product emissions, such as terpenes, triggers formation of ultrafine particles. IEMB is currently refining analytical approaches to better characterize the “soup” of particles and gases that results from operation of these devices in the presence of VOCs.

By Jennifer Parker

With the recent storms we have been experiencing in Southern California, our vehicles can also get a little under the weather. The rain can cause havoc on our vehicles interior. From that car window that wasn‘t rolled up all the way, to that sunroof you left slightly open, our cars are never safe from the harsh weather. Most people get a towel and try to dry up the water hoping that all the water is gone while others decide their only alternative is to take their car to a detail shop. What people don’t know is by doing either of these two quick fixes; you will only cause yourself more pain and money in the end. Once an excessive amount of water has entered the vehicle you must extract it out. There is no detail shop or towel that will take care of this matter. If the water is not removed correctly and in a timely manner the humidity will turn the water into mildew and your vehicle will contain a musty, mildew odor. And believe me there is no air freshener or Fabreeze-like product that will take this everlasting odor away. If your next intuition is to run down to your detail shop and give them a stab at it, all this will accomplish is spreading that musty, mildew odor throughout your vehicle. So what is your alternative??? The only place that I have come across that complete removes musty, mildew odors along with completely handling flood-damaged vehicles is Odor B Gone 2. They do it all! There is no job too big or too small. If you need to remove any odors, repair interior flood damage, you name it; they are here to help you. Your vehicle will look showroom ready when it leaves their shop. It’s simply amazing!

Your Vehicle Shouldn’t Have to Suffer in the Rain

When it rains, it pours and your vehicle always gets the worst of the rainy weather. From your wet, muddy shoes to that soaking wet umbrella you toss on the floor or on the seat next to you, after a big storm your vehicle could use a little fix-me-up. And those so-called detail shops only make matters worse when it comes to cleaning a vehicle sufficiently. Most of these shops use chemicals on your vehicle which cover-up and mask the problem areas. Why would you take your vehicle to one of these establishments knowing you are only damaging the interior of your vehicle? When it comes to finding a business that will clean your vehicle ask yourself these questions.

What type of products are they using in my vehicle?

Is this a reputable company who will back their services and work performed?

Many of us have children or pets that frequently travel in our vehicles. So making sure that our car is cleaned with non-toxic, hypoallergenic cleaning products is a must. An auto upholstery deep extraction service will not only make your vehicle’s interior look fresh and innovative, it will give you a sense of satisfaction as you drive around in this amazingly clean vehicle. From car payments, insurance and the rising gas prices, we pay a great deal of money on our vehicles. It only makes sense to hire experts to clean or work on your vehicle. When you need the best, they are only one click away.

We have also experienced some fragrances and the like that have even spoiled over time also causing auto interior odor issues.

Mixing Air fresheners and the like In your vehicle can compound and cause many more auto interior odor issues.

Some cases we have encountered have caused headaches, nausea, allergies aggravated, weakness, anxiety, respiratory distress=hard to breathe, unable to concentrate on driving, Skin irritation and rashes just to name a few.

Staci of Chino Hills CA (10/12/08)
My 2007 VW new beetle has terrible a terrible smell that consume the entire car. The best way to describe it is burning wax or burning crayon. VW refused to acknowledge the problem after countless visits to the dealership even though the car is still under warranty. I filed a formal written complaint to Volkswagen of America and after 1 week of research on their end, they called me back and said they were closing my file as the dealership said there was no abnormalities with my car.

The smell is so bad that it makes me sick. I get headaches and often have to pull over because I feel like I am going to pass out. After three months, the service director at my local dealership has finally stepped in to try and help me. My car is now gutted and they still can’t figure out what is causing the smell (which the service director admits to smelling.

VW so far has refused to buy back the car even though it is clearly a lemon and meets all criteria. If the service Director can’t get VW of America to rectify the situation soon, I will have no choice but to hire an attorney. This is happening to a lot of people and VW of America acts like they don’t know what is going on. This is unfair to the consumer. What chemical fumes am I breathing? HELP!

Headaches, Vomiting, Light Headed, smell from the fumes saturate my hair and clothing daily!!!!

I don’t feel right trading in the car as I can’t pass this problem on to someone else. I think it is dangerous! I don’t even know if I could sell the car or trade it in. Anyone who pulls up a carfax report will see how many times the car has been in the shop for this unresolved problem. I have owned the car for 4 months. It has been in the shop countless time for a total of approx. 45 days with no resolution. They are a lot of consumers out on the internet with the same problem as me!
